SCUM MANIFESTO Echoes 64
SCUM Echoes *
Térésa faucon
The Restoration of Scum Manifesto invites us to listen to most recent echoes of the voices of Carole, Delphine and Valerie. These voices still resonate with contemporary works but do they still res-onate within them and how? Here, the term resonance is used in the strong sense, and not simply in the usual and thus diminished meaning of the connection made between works that are widely used in order to follow filiations, to establish kinship/communi-ties of artists on the basis of variable criteria: ideological, formal, and contextual. It is the strong sense of the resonance given to a voice and its responses since the video Scum Manifesto is, above all, a performative device that aims at embodying a voice in order to emphasise it, at giving reach to one voice that accounts for voic-es of women. The mise-en-scène consists of two perpendicular axis, around a table:
— an horizontal/lateral axis (three women: Carole is facing Del-phine, who is holding the first translation of the book by Valerie Solanas whose face on the book cover is looking at “us”. The for-mer is typing, as if she was under dictation, what the latter is read-ing out;
* “Réplique” in French has also a meaning as “aftershock” which is why we decided to translate it as echoes in English.
