I began working with Éric Seydoux in the 1980’s, when well-known illustrators were being sought out by publishers to create posters, objects, “para comics” and other kinds of screen-prints. For most of these illustrators working in the “clear line” tradition, with black outlines and flat areas of color, the technique of screenprinting was ideal. As for my work, in which different shades of watercolors bled into one another, I had to rethink my handling of color with a limited palette–to respect the budget–and with flat zones of solid color. This new process greatly interested me and opened up new horizons, such as with the portfolio Escales.
Today, there isn’t as much screenprint-ing being done in the field of “para com-ics”, and I’ve replaced this way of think-ing about color with paintings on glass, in which I’m confronted with the same difficulty.
Meeting Éric had been highly rewarding, and I always appreciated his thorough-ness. The last important project with him was a bibliophile edition for Les Cent Une, a magnificent creation which, as I remember, was a great source of worry for him...
I also remember the day when my wife, who works at the Fondation de France, and I had lunch with Éric’s father, the French ambassador and president of the Fondation. He showed us Benito’s port-folio Chic ou Voyou and was delighted by our enthusiastic reactions. There was a certain discrepancy...
