11. How can one resolve the equation between freedom of use and prescribed use? What parameters might provide a basis for development?

MSz: I’m afraid I don’t see the equation you refer to. Ideally, objects and pieces of furniture should inspire uses, even if we feel encumbered to a certain extent by the object’s physical presence. As a maker, my practice involves envisaging how the things I create will be used, which implies consideration of the user, his or her body, and the user’s environment. Unlike an artist, for whom ideas are all it takes to make a work, a maker builds on knowledge of previous structures and their related technologies. Designers can no longer just play with forms and ideas to churn out yet another product. Experience has taught me that making a new table is fairly easy but that I will reject innumerable models until finally I find one that, for various reasons, I consider worth producing! After so many rejected designs, I know the one I choose, just by existing, will have an impact on the perception of everything that I have done up until then. This has been a constant quest of mine, a thought in progress.
